Most adults who want Mandarin do not lack methods. They have a pile of them: an app, a textbook, a video channel, a tutor they have not booked. This shelf is for the decision underneath the pile. What do you need to be able to do, and which kind of help matches that?

The first published notes are a ruler and a label. The ruler takes the 2,200-hour figure apart so you can stop measuring a restaurant order against a diplomat’s exam. The label asks whether Chinese is hard to learn, which is a different job from counting hours. After that, the useful work is still sound: tones a person can hear.

How to use the first page

If you arrived because a chart told you Mandarin takes years you do not have, read the hours note first. If you arrived because people said it was too hard to start, read the label note. Name the task you want. Do not start a new app in the same sitting as a way to feel faster.

If you already have an app open and the score is confusing you, skip the ruler for a moment and go to Pronunciation. The hours will still be here when you come back.

What is not here yet

A week-one path from zero, a return path after a long gap, and a clear split between studying alone, following a course, and working with a teacher are still unwritten. Until they exist, this shelf will not pretend they do. None of them will try to teach the whole language on one URL.

Pages that belong later still have to pass the same test as the rest of the notebook: one problem, named sources, no promise that a starting plan carries you to a named exam level. The rule is in the editorial policy.
